The Stoughton Healthy Children and Neighborhoods Alliance (SHCNA) is a voluntary program of community members helping foster children’s optimal health, development and well-being throughout our city and neighborhoods. SHCNA engages parents, educators, community leaders, business owners, and residents to support and advocate for growth in the city of Stoughton without jeopardizing public health and safety.

A number of scientific studies have documented an increased risk of cancer and other adverse health effects among those living, learning, or spending extended periods of time within 500- to 1,000-feet of a gas station. Children, Stoughton’s youngest and most vulnerable population, are particularly susceptible to the negative health effects of benzene and other toxic compounds released to the air from gas stations, as well as to the immediate risks of moving vehicles in close proximity.

The aerial image below shows the location and proposed site map of the proposed Kwik Trip gas station/car wash/convenience store. There are five places of child care and learning within the bright orange, 500-foot public health and safety impact zone shown. Four of the five school or child care facilities, which are shown with blue location markers, have 180 children in full day, long-term care. Additionally, 99 homes neighbor the site, several residents of which live within the 500-foot impact zone.

Please sign our petition urging the City of Stoughton Common Council to safeguard our children and neighborhoods

Your support will help in two ways:

  1. Help guide the proposed gas station away from the high-impact location combining 1700 E Main Street and 1701 Cedarbrook Lane and toward a lower-impact location.
  2. Establish a minimum 500-foot public safety zone to guide all new gas stations to low-impact sites away from sensitive land uses like residential properties, schools, daycares, and assisted living facilities.
